As the old silversmith carefully held a piece of silver over the fire, he explained the refining process. "The silver or gold must be held in the hottest part of the flame in order to burn away all the impurities," he said. "If it is removed too soon, it remains impure. If it is left in the flame too long, it will be destroyed."

When asked how he knew when the metal was properly refined, he replied, "When I can see my image in it."
